Problems importing new photos

I'm using Gallery Mage on Windows XP, and I'm occasionally having some problems when first loading a directory as a gallery, while images are being added. On occasion, the log at the bottom of the windows shows one of two error messages: "Null metadata - skipping" and "ERROR: Illegally sized directory". The gallery ends up loading, but some of the pictures are missing. The images are all digital camera photos.

Also, a few times during this process, the program will freeze up while adding certain images and I have to close it and restart. I've solved this by opening and re-saving those particular images in Paint or another graphics application, but I'm still curious to know what about those images is causing this to happen.

It sounds to me that the photos are corrupted for some reason. It is not unheard of to have images that Java (which Gallery Mage uses) cannot process, but if some work from the same source (in your case digital camera) then really they should all work.

The two errors you see are in relation to the Meta Data reading of the image. Even if this fails, the image should continue to load (although if the actual image is problematic, then it may not load). When you say "pictures are missing" are there blank space in the gallery or are they just not there at all?

If you can upload or email me some of the source images that are causing you woes I can try them on my end.

I don't recommend opening them and saving them again if you have to because JPEG is a lossy format (hence the reason for Gallery Mage existing - to allow you to process your images without altering the originals even for things like rotation). If there is no other choice, I don't recommend using Paint to do it (Paint isn't the most reliable program), use another one like Paint Shop Pro and chose a fairly high compression so you don't lose any quality.

I have made some changes to the code so that if one image fails the rest of the gallery should continue to load. Download this file and replace the one in your Gallery Mage directory.

IMPORTANTLY: Make sure you run Gallery Mage in "debug" mode (the debug shortcut). This is so you can give me more detailed error messages.

Thanks for the help and the updated file - it's much appreciated. Just so you know, I tried to load the same gallery again (before your response), and while I still received the same error messages I described, all the images did load correctly. I'm thinking that there's a chance I may have miscounted before - I apologize for misleading you if that's the case.

Still, I did have one more instance of the program freezing up while loading an image in a different gallery (which again was fixed by opening and saving). Hopefully the updated file will fix that. I would send it to you, but I've lost track of which file it was. If it happens again, I'll make a note of the file and send it your way.

The photos I'm using are all from digital cameras, but not necessarily all the same one. I didn't take them, and for my purposes, it doesn't matter much where they're from, so I haven't been paying close attention, but I'll have to see if I can find a pattern there.
