More Info on Sharing Via Facebook

Postby dynapolis » Tue Jun 15, 2010 1:27 pm

In 2009 I used GPSLog to capture KML (?) data and emailed it to myself, and then uploaded that to my own Google Maps platform.

I'm curious about how sharing with Facebook works. So, let's say I'm on a road trip, stopping 3-4 times during the day and recording those stops with GPSLog. This continues for 7-8 days. If I want to share this on Facebook, could I upload it daily, and somehow all of my stops are kept together? If I did this daily, would my trip stay as a "story"? I'm not familiar with the "story" term on Facebook, but perhaps it is just a way to describe a posting.

So, any description or tips on using this Facebook share feature would be great.

Thanks...Doug Gentry

Hi Doug,

Right now it will upload a new "Track" each time (though fortunately, only uploads the photos when they are now). So it probably doesn't really support what you want to do.

I am working on these features right now though, and want to have a better setup for doing what you are doing. In fact I am totally re-writing how the whole Facebook/Twitter/etc integration works.

http://mapatrek.com/ provides a service to GPS Log where you can have a continually updated Map (though not supported on Facebook).

When do you start your trip?

Cheers,
Will

Thanks for the news, Will.

I'll be starting on the road on June 25. So it looks like I'll use my hand-made integration with GPSLog again this summer.

Sorry it won't be ready in time.

Does your hand-made integration use the a GPS Log Service API?

If so, you can actually publish stories on Facebook from your own Service! Stories are published under the GPS Log for iPhone Facebook App, but you can set whatever content you like! Interested?

It's not very hard to do, you basically set a flag in the GLS file, then when you send your reply to GPS Log, pass some key-value pairs for FB.

Hey, no problem with the timing. I'm just happy to be along for the ride. I do this once a year (a two month journey to the Adirondack Mountains in NY from Southern Oregon and back). So each year I have to re-remember the process. I describe it here: http://dynapolis.com/trip_display.lasso#geek

I'll often use my "Share on Facebook" plug-in with my browser to post a progress note on my FB profile - linking to the web page I've constructed.
