Hi,

The data for GPS Log is backed up along with all the data on your iPhone regularly when you sync with iTunes. It can be restored (e.g. if the iPhone is lost) by initiating a restore in iTunes. If you right click the iPhone in iTunes you can manually run a backup by selecting "Back up".

In a catastrophic situation, it is also theoretically possible for me to manually restore a GPS Log database by extracting it from the iTunes backup, however this should be rare as the automated restore should work 99.9% of the time.

I will post some more detailed information shortly on backing up (and how to backup the iTunes backup) shortly. I will also post some more details shortly about the services I can offer in the unlikely event of a catestropic failure.

I would also recommend exporting to GPX regularly as this will export almost all of the data stored in GPS Log (with the exception of the photographs).

Regards,
Will

I've come across this issue before. I have used iPhone Backup Extractor from http://supercrazyawesome.com/ to individually back up my iPhone apps. I have a jailbroken and unlocked iphone 3G running 3.0.1 and this has worked very well for me as a backup to my iTunes backup before running a jailbreak.

I use that too, very useful for backing up. I also use it for development so I can extract the data and inspect it... :)

f.y.i GPS Log just stores its data in a sqlite3 database, allowing you to use any sqlite3 tools to take a look at the data. The bulk of the entry data is stored in a binary BLOB however (an serialized NSObject...).

What are the paths for where the data is stored on the iPhone so I can back up that data, without having to use the backup utility to go through the entire phone backup file.

Is there going to be a way to re-import a KZM back into GPS Log? That would be fantastic, just stick the KZM in a specified folder on the phone, and then be able to import it.

I have re-organized a lot of the data, edited notes and such on the PC, and no way to get it back into GPS log as of yet.....

They are easy enough to find, just google for the OS in question.

I include the iPhone sync directory on my personal backups.

Hey John,

Sorry about that.

Are you in Windows? Try:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup (source)

[NB in Windows this is a hidden folder, you will need to show hidden folders to view it]

On Mac, mine is located here:
~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/ (where ~ is my home directory)

The files and folders look like junk e.g. 4be7874c4cb452146eed834519a9 but it contains the iphone data. You can verify by doing a Backup in iTunes and seeing

Hope that answers your question.

@Will: Thanks, but I am trying to find the path on the phone, not on windows. I am not trying to backup all the data for the phone from the windows directory, just trying to find the directory on the iPhone where the data is stored.

Using iPhone browser, I want to just copy the info out, and then if need be in the future just copy the data back to the directory on the phone.

As it stands right now, I can not even load GPSLog on the phone. I have a lot of saved locations, with the higher resolution pictures saved, and when I try to load it on the phone, it starts loading and about 30 seconds later crashes and I am back to the spring board.

My thought was that to make the .KZM backup to send, it must be stored on the phone somewhere. If it is deleted after sending, then I was hoping to at least copy the SQL database files from the phone to the PC.

I just do not know all of the names of the files, and their locations in the iPhone's directory structure.

JohnWPB,

I see. On mac there is a program called the iPhone Backup Extractor from supercrazyawesome.com.

I think on windows there is a similar program.

These are one-way extraction tools however, so not exactly what you are after.

I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with GPS Log. Would you like me to help? If you are able to extract (from backup or iphone) and send me the GPS Log data (expect to see a gpslog*.sqlite file and lots of .JPG files), I may be able to help you.

Regards,
Will

I have read the posts under this thread but still do not know what to do.

When I transferred to the new Iphone4 the data portions of the apps did not transfer. I took the phone to an Apple store but they were also unable to get my backup to restore properly.

What I have is a good backup. I seem to have the jpgs from the program. I also exported from my old phone via your fabulous ftp client, so I have a kmz file. While it would not be ideal, I could probably match the jpgs to the entries, should I get them imported.

So.

My direct question is, can I, and if I can, then how do I import or restore the gps log data?

Your program is brilliant, thank you.

Firstly: backup your entire iTunes backup directory now. Do this before you sync (maybe too late). iTunes has a habit of overwriting these files, so secure them now. Hold off syncing until you have your data back.

Did you backup GPS Log via FTP? Do you have a .sqlite file & a bunch of JPEG images (the KML is different)?
If so, you can restore GPS Log via FTP

If not, do you still have your old phone? Then you can use GPS Log's FTP feature to download all the data, and upload it to your new iPhone 4.

If not, you can try extracting *just* the GPS Log data from your backup then restoring it via the FTP feature as per above. I don't know what the best Windows tool is, but the best Mac one is at http://supercrazyawesome.com

I hope you are able to upload your .sqlite file & .jpg images back onto GPS Log using one of these methods.

There is no way to import .KML files at the moment. This is in the long-term plan however, so don't lose hope, please keep those files handy for the future.

Going forward, I have some tips here on some of the ways you can keep your data safe!

I'm really glad you like the program! Thank you, and good luck with your data restoration. Please let me know how you go.
